Nov. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- John Thompson, President of the Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis, has received the 2011 “Excellence in Leadership Award” from the national VisionServe Alliance for making significant contributions to create or improve services for people with vision loss in greater St. Louis and across Missouri. Mr. Thompson was given the “Excellence in Leadership Award” by VisionServe Alliance officials at ceremonies last week in New York City.

“I am humbled to receive this award, which I will accept and dedicate to the employees, clients and supporters of the Lighthouse for the Blind-Saint Louis,” Mr. Thompson said.

In October 2011, Mr. Thompson and Lighthouse employees celebrated the Grand Opening of a new, 17,000-square-foot manufacturing and warehouse addition at its facility at 10440 Trenton Avenue in St. Louis County. The new building addition featuring an ISO Class 8 (100,000) Clean Room, product assembly area, Activities for Daily Living training rooms and offices. It will support the Lighthouse service mission and non-profit business growth, help put more visually-impaired employees to work and enhance Lighthouse customer service.

In addition, in November 2011 the Lighthouse announced that it is sponsoring a new program in Springfield, Missouri, to help children with visual impairments build new friendships, develop social skills, increase independence and promote participation in community activities.  The program, Southwest Kids in Action (SWKIA), will introduce a new recreational activity or community project each month such as Goalball, archery, canoeing and rock climbing.  SWKIA is designed for children ages 10 – 18.  Cost to participate is free.

Mr. Thompson was nominated for the “Excellence in Leadership Award” by David Ekin, ACSW, LCSW, President of the St. Louis Society for the Blind & Visually Impaired, and Debbie Naucke, Executive Director of The Delta Gamma Center for Children with Visual Impairments, with endorsements by Marjorie Williams, Executive Director of Minds Eye Information Services, and Kevin Hollinger a certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist representing several vision loss organizations. All commend Mr. Thompson for his significant leadership and support of innovative programs, services and related organizations in greater St. Louis and Missouri.
