Oct. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – On November 1, 2011 the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers, Inc. (FFMT) and the Call Me MISTER program will host its first FFMT and Call Me MISTER Day in Tallahassee, FL.  Activities will begin at 9:00am in Senate Committee Meeting Room 301-S.  Both FFMT and Call Me MISTER offer state-funded programs that seek to enhance diversity in Florida’s public schools by facilitating the education and hiring of minority students into the teaching profession.

The primary purpose of this meeting is to introduce and familiarize legislators and participants with both programs and their impact on the diversity of the state’s teaching population.  Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from students who are recipients of funding through FFMT and those who are participants in Call Me MISTER.  Additionally, there will be a discussion on how these programs can continue to be successful in the future and how future funding from the state will affect that success.

FFMT is a non-profit Florida corporation with 501(c)(3) status. It was established in 1996 as a means of increasing the number of minority teachers in the State of Florida to better reflect the diversity of the state’s population. FFMT administers the Minority Teacher Education Scholarship to juniors and seniors enrolled in state approved teacher education programs at colleges and universities across the state. The award offers $4,000 a year to qualified minority students, and requires that upon graduation, each scholar teach in a Florida public school for the same number of years that they received the scholarship.

Since its inception in 1996, FFMT has had over 4,900 scholars come through its program. Of this amount, it has been verified that over 71% have either taught or are currently teaching in a Florida public school. Currently, FFMT has nearly 300 scholars.
