Oct. 31, 2011 - PRLog -- Every company has the potential to become a great workplace, says Zrinka Lovrencic, Director, Great Place to Work. Employees will feel secure in their environment if the organisation has a reputation of being trustworthy and honourable.

From a sponsor company at the upcoming marcus evans HR Summit 2012, in the Gold Coast, Australia, 4 - 6 March, Lovrencic discusses why Human Resources (HR) must have a meaningful relationship with employees to ensure their growth and satisfaction within the organisation.

What makes an organisation a great place to work?

Zrinka Lovrencic: Every company has the potential to become a prosperous workplace. If organisations want to change, they must aspire to become their best rather than relentlessly fixing what is wrong. By focusing on the examples set by other great workplaces and following in their footsteps, they can prosper.

Regardless of the culture, industry, age or size, trust is the key differentiator in a great workplace. If an organisation is trustworthy then employees will feel secure and will flourish in their environment.

What drives an employee to success?

Zrinka Lovrencic: There are two types of employees: those who work from nine-to-five and those who have a succession plan in place and know where they want to be in five years time. We can better understand what drives employees by creating an honourable relationship with them. After recognising who wants to strive, we can ensure that they are on the path to success through the appropriate learning and development programmes.

It is crucial to identify the leaders in the workforce. This can be done by first categorising what the characteristics of a leader are. HR will then be able to recognise which employees have these features, and help them plan out their career more efficiently. Employee will feel thankful and be encouraged to reach their full potential.

What methods of rewarding top talent would you suggest?

Zrinka Lovrencic: Every employee will value different types of rewards and it is HR’s job to discover what will work best. Organisations may opt to link their rewards and recognition programme to an API (Australian Post-tel Institute) system, which provides employees with a wide range of benefits including insurance and healthcare. In other workplaces, having a simple culture of saying “Thank You” may be enough.

Employees must enjoy their work and be fond of those around them. If they feel that they are being respected by management and have a comfortable working environment then they will feel rewarded for their services to the organisation.

How can organisations successfully retain top talent?

Zrinka Lovrencic: The labour market in Australia is very shallow and organisations are having a tough time finding relevant employees with the right skills and cultural traits. Although retaining talent is essential to success, we must first find ways of attracting this talent.

HR managers must clearly understand the employee’s needs and what it is that they are looking to gain from their work. We must know where they would like to go, what their career development plans are and help them on that route to success.

What is your outlook for the coming years?

Zrinka Lovrencic: There must be more focus on diversity management. There are such distinct generations in play at the moment, who all work, learn and want to be rewarded very differently. The Baby Boomers are close to retirement, Generation X is trying to grasp the constant changes online and Generation Y consists of graduates who are now beginning their career.

HR must get to know employees at a deeper level if it wishes to integrate all generations within the workplace.
