Oct. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- Everyone talks about marketing their websites and getting rankings in the search engines. So SEO has become a popular buzz word and you find hundreds of companies from all over the world promoting their services to promote your site.

Just the other day, I saw an ad that said they would give me 5000 backlinks delivered in 2 days for just 15 dollars. I was rather taken aback. I mean.. 5000 backlinks?? Yeah right, you've heard that backlinks is the most important part about promoting a website but building 5000 backlinks in a day? Would that really work? I think not, and I'll tell you why in just a moment. In case you do not know what a back link is.. it is a simply link pointing to your website from any other website.

Backlinks happens to be a large part of the algorithm that search engines use to rank a website in their search results. So the common belief is that if you have a ton of links pointing to your website, your site should rank well. Well, though that may be partly true, there is much more to it. You see, a link that points to your website is considered a vote. So the more votes you have for a website, the better and more relevant the search engines consider it to be.

There are several other complex factors, onsite and offsite, that influence that search engine ranking of a website. Website layout and bounce rate are just a couple of them.

Let's first examine how search engines work. We already know that backlinks are important, but if a website owner builds a thousand links every day, would it really help? Let's take a look.

The bottom line is that search engines, especially Google, want to provide only the most relevant search results to their visitors. For that, they have several hundred metrices and factors that they take into consideration. The "quality" of the votes that a page gets being among the more important factors. Getting just a couple of links from high authority websites can make a huge, non-linear difference to your search engine rankings.

What also matters is the rate at which links are created. If you're building thousands of links to your site with no consideration of quality and the rate at which you are building links, you're going in the wrong direction.

Stop and think. You really think Google cannot see through this "artificial link building"? Is it even possible that your "weight loss reviews" or any other affiliate site gets thousands of people linking to it within a week of launching? Doesn't look natural to me.. and I'm sure to the search engines as well.

So, if you want to create a website that ranks well with the search engines and for a long time to come, you need to learn the real way to optimize your website and backlinks. With the right knowledge, it's actually quite simple. Many marketers do follow the indiscriminate link building theory, but with little and short term results.
