C.W. Driver Creates New Special Projects Group

The West Coast builder’s new Driver SPG will function as a fast-moving, self-sufficient company

Oct. 13, 2011 - PRLog -- General contractor C.W. Driver has formed a new independent company under its corporate umbrella that will focus on smaller-scale projects — a new foray for Southern California’s leading construction firm.

Driver SPG will be managed out of its own Anaheim headquarters and will garner construction jobs C.W. Driver has previously not specialized in. Operating with less overhead, it will be cost-effective, but will deliver the same service and experience upon which the firm has built its long-standing reputation.

“With the backing of a 92-year-old company that has the experience, legacy and resources that C.W. Driver possesses, our new enterprise will have a project delivery method far beyond anything else in the current market,” said C.W. Driver President Dana Roberts. “Driver SPG will provide the same excellent service the parent company is known to provide.”

Driver SPG, which stands for Special Project Group, will target projects under $10 million in all of C.W. Driver’s key regions: Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura and San Diego counties, as well as Southern California’s Inland Empire.

While most general contracting firms create divisions or departments within their companies to handle these types of projects, Driver SPG will operate independently, which is an advantage for the client, according to Karl Kreutziger, Driver SPG’s executive vice president.

“As a standalone company that also self-performs work, we can be more cost effective and flexible,” Kreutziger said. “We can mobilize to a project on a moment’s notice and adjust to changing circumstances, which is inherent in the scale of work we will be doing. A developer of these smaller projects needs a contractor who can turn on a dime.”

The new firm will be able to tap into C.W. Driver’s construction experience and management resources, as well as its purchasing power for materials. In return, it will capture a segment of the Southern California construction market that the parent company has not concentrated on in the past.

“In today’s economy, there is growing activity in the small- to medium-sized construction market,” said C.W. Driver Executive VP John Thornton. “Our agile Special Projects Group gives us a competitive advantage. We can give those customers affordable management services, prompt start-up schedules and shorter completion times without sacrificing service.”
