Half a Century at Racecourse for John

50th season at Newton Abbot Racecourse for John Baker

Oct. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- As Newton Abbot Racecourse celebrate the end of another season on Friday 7th October, one long-standing member of the team will be celebrating their 50th season at the course.

John Baker, 80, has just completed his 50th year at the course, having first joined on a ‘trial basis’ in 1961.

“When I originally started at Newton Abbot, I was offered the opportunity to try a spare-time job and I’ve been trying it ever since.”

Recalling the various roles he’s performed at the course over the past 50 years, Mr Baker said: “My first job was working on the gate taking the money and handing over the tickets. Over the years there are few jobs I haven’t done. I’ve worked with the veterinary team, assisting the starter, worked in the grandstand as security and for the past 30 years I’ve worked in the weighing room.”

Looking back over his time at Newton Abbot, he recalls a lot of change but consistency at the same time. “The biggest change over the years has been all of the building work that has taken place. Being able to see the horses up-close in the Parade Ring is just fantastic.”

“I’ve seen a lot of staff come and go but the management team have always been terrific. Pat Masterson, the Managing Director, is brilliant and always very concerned about you, as are the medical team.”

As to be expected, John recalls many a story over the years but claims “too many just can’t be repeated.”

Becoming such a permanent feature at the course over the past half a century, John has formed strong relationships with all who visit the course. Racedays at Newton Abbot are somewhat a family affair for John whose wife Jean has also worked at the course for over 20 years.

Looking towards the future, John shows no sign of retiring any time soon. “I love my job and have no intention of finishing. I’m going to keep going until I can no longer work and if that happens, I’ll buy a Members Badge and go as a visitor instead, if they’ll have me!”
To mark the special occasion, the racecourse have named a race in John’s honour: the 2:55 50 Years of Service John Baker Novices´ Limited Handicap Chase.

Tickets for the final fixture of 2011 at Newton Abbot are on sale now. For more information visit www.newtonabbotracing.com or call 01626 353 235.
