Basketball Backstop Structure Safety Device Prevents Serious Injury to Children @ UC San Diego Rimac

Sept. 22, 2011 - PRLog -- At a recent youth basketball camp, an Auto-Loc safety device prevented a retracted basketball structure from free-falling to the gymnasium floor. The device prevented potential serious injuries to the several children occupying the floor and bleachers near the structure.

Quoting David Finewood of Sports Facilities Group, you can think of this device as “a seat belt for the basketball structure as it prevents the structure from free falling, just as a seatbelt restrains a person in a car crash, preventing catastrophe.”

In this recent case, a pulley failed while the structure was in the raised position, allowing it to drop suddenly. Without the Auto-Loc safety strap in place, this structure would have fallen rapidly to the open position and the inertia would have ripped the structure from the ceiling mount causing this heavy object to fall on those attending the camp.
