Ease of entry and low overhead contribute to the appeal

Sept. 20, 2011 - PRLog -- El Prado, NM - - With unemployment numbers still high, and many feeling unsure about their professional future, more and more people are deciding to start their own business.  One of the easiest businesses for them to start… and the one we’re seeing more and more of every day… is the direct sales, home-based business.

The direct sales business is a popular way to reach people on an individual level and bring a personalized shopping experience to them and their friends.  It’s also, of course, a great way to earn an income, either full or part-time.

It is not, however, a “get rich quick scheme.”  Direct sales, like any other business, requires a committed entrepreneur, dedicated to building a business from the ground up.

One of the reasons these types of business are so popular is that the market for direct sales has never been stronger.  According to the Direct Sellers Association (DSA), there were $28.33 billion in direct retail sales made by 16.1 million direct sellers.

What are some other reasons for the popularity of this type of business?  Flexibility and independence are two substantial draws.  Scheduling office hours and appearances around other priorities such as family is appealing.  And, if you start a direct sales business as a result of job loss, you can continue it on a part-time basis if you decide to re-enter the workplace.

Also, the field of opportunities is so varied that you can choose an area that appeals to you.  Jean Chatzky, best-selling author and Financial Editor of the Today Show, advises potential direct sellers to, “Pick something you’re passionate about.  You’re fronting it.  Chances are if you don’t believe in it, you’re not going to be very successful.”

According to Direct Selling News, the number of direct sellers increased in 2010.  Looking forward to 2011, “analysts expect that those who entered the direct selling arena as a way to make up for lost income will remain active even as the economy recovers. That trend will likely lead to higher sales for the year.”

New Mexico business owner, Monica Weaver, knows firsthand what it is involved in operating a successful direct sales business. Monica is the owner of El Prado-based Add a Little Dazzle, a paper craft business.
