Steinel Solutions For A Master & Slave Configuration For Motion Sensors

Sept. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- The Steinel presence detectors also provide the option of an interconnected master/master and master/slave system. In the case of an interconnected master/master system, the detection zone is extended by the interconnected detectors. Each detector switches it sownload in accordance with each Master's individual settings.

Steinel offers lights with integrated sensor swhich are called the RS pro series. These too can be networked in a master and slave configuration.

WHAT IS A MASTER & SLAVE SOLUTION

   Master as the name implies is the Principle motion sensor with all the sensor attributes that require dynamic adjustment of the parameters i.e. distance, range, lux, timing, dimming percentages, convenience light levels and so on.  The Master always works in conjunction with another Master Sensor or a Slave sensor and the basic objective is to “ENHANCE THE DETECTION ZONE” of a large area like the corridor, car park, staircase etc.

A slave on the other hand is only a detector with none of the variable attributes like the range, lux, time etc., – it only reports the presence or absence of a human being in a defined area and communicates the status to the interfaced master which in turn decides whether or not to turn on or off the connected load. Simplistically speaking the Slave has no real intelligence of its own to govern and control the circuits independently.

What is the basic motive of a Master & Slave Solution?

The basic purpose of this solution is to enhance the detection range and pre-empt any dark areas where occupancy is detected. So lets take the case of a large corridor, stairway or a car park. Typically in any of these areas, the occupant would have to be within the detection zone of a sensor for it to turn on the lighting circuit. This can also mean that the occupant would observe unlit areas that can be detrimental or obstructive to the occupant. It may pre-empt the occupant from moving towards these unlit areas under the pretext of fear of an accident, collision or any other unsolicited activity that generates an element of fear.

In public areas like hotels & shopping malls this scenario may become untenable for the guests and lead to an inconvenient situation leading to complaints.

The master and slave solution principally is designed to ensure that there are no unlit areas and pre-empts any dark spots in the line of movement of the occupant. This could be a corridor, staircase or even the car park.

What is the pricing pattern of a Master and a Slave Sensor?

The master or the principal sensor with all the variable attributes is more expensive as compared to a slave that performs a simple detection function in conjunction with the Master. As the slave detector does not possess any variable attributes it is cheaper as compared to the Master Sensor

What is the cost implication of a Master & Slave solution?

Essentially the master and slave solution is designed to cut costs when compared to a conventional sensor-wiring format. Lets assume in a given corridor one needs 5 normal master sensors with all the variable attributes. These 5 sensors are wired up to the lighting loads and are designed to turn on the loads when the occupant is in the zone of detection.  They could also be wired up in parallel to enhance the detection zone which is also called a Master – Master configuration.

Compare this with a Master and slave configuration where there is a master sensor with slave sensors to perform the very same activity.

Quite obviously the latter solution with a higher number of slaves will be cheaper as compared to the Master – Master solution.

It can have a domino effect on the overall investment outlay when installing sensors for a large building complex and hence the masterand slave solution is preferred to keep the primary investment costs under control.
