Sept. 9, 2011 - PRLog -- If your hardwood floor is looking a little worn its easy to give them a lift with a few easy steps. That’s the beauty about real wood floors, they last for years as they are so hardwearing and their appearance can easily be changed to suit your décor.  Now is the perfect time of year to give your natural oak flooring an autumn make over- just in time for when the dark winter nights start drawing into an early close.

To repair a scratched hardwood floor
Unlike carpets and other types of flooring solid wood floors are extremely robust and small scratches and scuffs can usually be quickly and easily disguised. To do this you will simply need to buy a wood finish marker pen which can be bought from most hardware stores.  These pens allow you to just colour in the scratch- to make it much less noticeable.

Refinishing your oak floor for a new look

To refinish a solid oak floor it’s essential to have been given the right training and possess the right tools for the job before starting the process.  Because of this it’s usually recommended that you hire a professional to complete the job for you, who should be able to finish the entire process within five days.  Most types of natural oak flooring can be restored to their original condition simply with a buff and recoating treatment. This involves lightly sanding the oak floor to remove any surface scratches which prepares the wooden floor for the new coat of finishing paint.  Flooring experts advise that you need to buff and apply a coat of finish three times to achieve a professional look.

Get creative by painting your solid oak floor
If you want to make a statement in your home why not think about painting your wooden floor. A wooden floor painted in a bold colour can really help to give your home a fresh look. And if you’re feeling really creative why not let your inner artist flow and paint a unique design directly onto the solid wood flooring to create a non-permanent focal point.  Before getting your brightly coloured tins of paints out you’ll need to prep the wooden floor by sanding it and applying primer. This ensures that the surface is clean, dry and smooth, so that you get an even, professional looking finish.  It’s also important to fill any cracks in the wooden flooring so that the paint doesn’t seep into them and ruin the look of your customised floor.

The benefit of painting your floor is that you can carefully choose the paints, glazes, finishes and design yourself to achieve a look you are truly proud of. And what’s more, if you feel like changing the design all you need to do is to sand it off and start again!
