Follow on Google News | ![]() Fresno Superintendent Gives Away Salary, Donates to SchoolSuperintendent Powell of Fresno County Schools leads by example. Powell just donated the lions share of his salary for the next three years back to his school district.
By: Jon Nemeth The move, which stands in stark contrast to the recent corruption scandal in Bell, CA, where the city's lead officials secretly paid themselves hundreds of thousands of dollars in bonus salaries, is a shining example of moral integrity at a time when California needs it the most. Because of his self-imposed salary cut, Powell will now collect only $31,000 a year until 2015-- $288,241 less a year than he would have made had he not sacrificed his income for the sake of his school district. In a time when budgets are shrinking across the board, and with increasing concern about how our schools will keep up with both national and foreign competition, heroic acts like Powell's are needed more than ever. California was recently ranked 50th in the nation (Last), with regards to the number of students to teachers, which is a key indicator of California's education budget crises. With more superintendent's and other patriotic American citizens doing their part like Mr. Powell, education in California could take a turn for the better.
