Hathaway is the picture of gentility

Aug. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- The film, a faithful adaptation of the best-selling book by David Nicholls (who also serves as screenwriter), meant Hathaway needed to adopt Emma's Leeds-born accent, a challenge she deems "a spiky, fanged, angry little thing" that was hanging in front of her as she prepared for the role.

Today, Hathaway, 28, is the picture of gentility. Her hair is pulled back, and aside from cat-eye makeup, her look is comfortable. In a cardigan, a short puffed skirt and ballet flats, she plays with a delicate strand of semiprecious stones around her neck, worried about the group of friends she made in London shooting One Day.

She compares speaking authoritatively in a nuanced British accent to "wearing a dress that doesn't fit on a really big occasion — and you know you can't fidget," says Hathaway, who worked with a dialect coach for the film. "But I worked and worked at it."

"It was just me on my own for the first time in a few years," says Hathaway, who left her assistant, her boyfriend and Labrador Esmerelda behind for the long European shoot. In One Day (out today), Hathaway plays an awkward, idealistic young woman whose struggling romance with wealthy playboy Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess) evolves over 20 years. Their love story "actually happens in real time," says Hathaway, who fell in love with the honest, and at times heartbreaking, soul-mate story. Beginning at university, the film visits the two annually on July 15, weaving their unique romance around first jobs, foolish lovers, halting careers and loss.
