Aug. 19, 2011 - PRLog -- August 19, 2011 - Blood donation is a very noble cause and everyone should donate blood regularly to meet the demand of donated blood irrespective of the blood type. One should also be aware about the facts related to blood donation. Docturs.com offers information about the universal recipients and donors of blood.

Whenever the blood is tested, the samples are taken and tested in the lab, to firstly determine the type or group of blood. Many are not even aware about their own blood group and when they meet with a fatal accident and need donated blood, it becomes very difficult as their blood group is not known.

For general awareness, there are different blood group types like A, B, AB and O. And type also has a negative or positive associated to it. Blood donations are also of two types where either whole blood is donated or platelets and plasma is donated. The individuals with O blood group and Rh D negative blood are called universal donors while the universal recipients are those with the blood type AB and Rh D positive. This is subject to the sensitization to Rh antigens and reactions to antibodies. There is an exception with the individuals with hh antigen system (also known as Bombay blod group) as they can receive blood only from other hh donors as they form antibodies against the H substance.

One should be aware about whether he/she is eligible for donating blood, as not every blood is considered worth the transfusion. Like, those donors with strong antibodies are avoided. One has to take care about antigens and antibodies because the RBCs - red blood cells might cause adverse reactions by clubbing with the antibodies. Also, the platelets and the WBCs - white blood cells, have their own antigens and sensitization which can create further complication with its transfusion.

When the plasma is going to be transfused, there is an inverse situation where the type O plasma, containing antibodies can be given only to the O recipients. It cannot be given to any other or else the antibodies will attack the antigens of other blood group. As ABO type of blood does not containing any antibodies, AB plasma can be given to patients of any ABO blood group.

All these facts about blood donation should be known for the betterment of the donor as well as the recipient. Docturs.com provides detailed information about every medical ailment for a better and alert living.
