Weekend Movie attendance dropped by more than 700,000 customers this past weekend despite three new high profile summer movies it was reported today by StudioDirect.

StudioDirect reports that customer attendance for the top 10 grossing films was 21,277,697 vs, last weekend's attendance of 21,977,567. That's 699,870 fewer customers accounting for a revenue loss of $5,521,974.

"This is a troubling trend that is having an effect on overall movie attendance", said Rusty Citron, President of StudioDirect. "With industry utilization capacity running at @ 12%" Citron continued, "we need more customers coming to their favorite theatres, not less".

The overall impact of a slower economy combined with higher ticket costs for 3D is hurting the movie industy in what has previously been a 'recession proof' industry. There are over 100 movies released during the prime summer months, and after a record breaking release just two weeks ago for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2", this is a significant drop in attendance.
