July 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Orlando-based Wave Software, a leading provider of early case assessment, legal hold, electronic data discovery, and litigation project management technology for global corporations, today offers its technical perspective of how computer forensics and e-discovery added some chilling evidence to the Casey Anthony case.

The computer forensics software used to harvest search data was CacheBack, which showed someone using the Anthony family computer made a high number of searches with certain key terms. The Orange County Sheriff’s office then used NetAnalysis and showed the site that was used to research chloroform was only visited once.

Regardless, the forensics applications found that Firefox Internet browser searches turned up keyword search terms such as “how to make chloroform,” “making weapons out of household products,” and “neck breaking.” This evidence was inconclusive, and though it was intended to bring down the defense, it was hard to prove that it was indeed Casey Anthony who conducted these web searches.

Robert Childress, III, co-founder and president of Wave Software said, “The use of technology and the ability to find metadata, the data ‘about’ data, was an important aspect of the high profile Casey Anthony case. While information found, such as search terms, pages visited, dates and times, are important factors to this case in particular, it can often become a smoking gun in other cases as well.”

What should be learned from the forensics and discovery aspect of the Casey Anthony trial is that while technology can help a case, it can also hurt a case if it cannot stand up to the test of opposing counsel. Computer forensics and discovery technology should have multi-layers of quality assurance and thoroughness that can attest to expert witness standards. Chain-of-custody reporting is also an essential piece that offers reliability and confidence that evidence found will add another form of efficacy to a product.

Wave Software’s Trident suite of products offers an in-depth chain-of-custody report that tracks and logs everything that is done in every project, including source PST or NSF files, project settings, de-duplication or generation method, and gigabytes processed down to the megabyte level. Reports can be saved as Excel spreadsheets for easy billing, production and reference.

Trident interactive searching allows the user to make a determination about his or her search terms and criteria by providing an immediate and detailed report on the list of keywords. It will then show the number of hits for the total search and by keyword. This helps mitigate false positives and erroneous hits. Once the interactive searching and culling is complete, processed data can be exported to PST, NSF or in its native file format and will allow users to conduct further analysis in common review platforms such as iCONECT, LexisNexis Concordance, and Relativity.

Trident Pro, in conjunction with the other niche forensic tools mentioned above, can drastically improve the effectiveness of culling, search and organization of Electronically Stored Information. With unstructured data in high demand for relevancy review, it is necessary to cull, organize and review the data in a cost-effective manner. Trident Pro is a trusted solution used globally by top experts for those purposes.
