Opportunity Links staff supported through redundancy by TCHC

The thorny subject of redundancy is never far from the headlines these days, with all sectors of business affected by financial constraints.

July 26, 2011 - PRLog -- But help is out there for those who are made redundant, thanks to workforce development specialist TCHC.  The company’s Response to Redundancy package includes advice, guidance and re-training opportunities to help individuals prepare for a new job, a new career path or a business start-up after redundancy.

Response to Redundancy Coordinator Lorraine Gimson explained that the package has proved invaluable for the former staff of Opportunity Links, a Cambridge company which worked to reduce poverty in the area.

She said: “The company was closing after more than ten years, affecting 38 people.   As a result, we were called in to provide support to staff very swiftly, as they were leaving within three weeks.”

The guidance from Lorraine and her team – provided free of charge to staff – included one-to-one information, advice and guidance sessions, along with CV writing and interview technique workshops.

According to Opportunity Links HR Manager Louise Foubister, the programme was instrumental in making the redundancy process as painless as possible.  She said: “The personal sessions and workshops were very much appreciated by staff, who gave me a lot of positive feedback.  TCHC helped us to maintain a positive and constructive atmosphere within the company at a very difficult time.”

For Opportunity Links web developer Mariko Brittain, the support proved invaluable.  She said: “I was with Opportunity Links for two years and had just applied for a mortgage for my first house with my boyfriend when I was made redundant.

“At the time, my team had been developing our website with a new content management system called Drupal.  This was a system I had little knowledge of, but I knew that there was a growing demand for Drupal developers in the industry.

“So I applied through TCHC for an advanced Drupal course to improve my career prospects.  As the course was taking place just after I was made redundant, TCHC fast-tracked my booking so I was able to attend.  This was very helpful as Drupal courses are few and far between.”

Mariko, who is in her early 30s and lives in Cambridge, added: “I was very happy with the training I received and was even offered freelance web development work from a fellow attendee on the course.  I am now employed on a fixed-term freelance contract so I am very grateful to TCHC.”

The Response to Redundancy package is fully funded by the East of England Development Agency and the European Social Fund, meaning there is no cost to employers or staff members.

The services of TCHC, which also include guidance on apprenticeship programmes as well as advice on grants and funding options, are available at no cost.  To date TCHC has helped over 45,000 businesses to develop tailored support packages that have improved morale, productivity and turnover for many.
