| Perennials are best to cut back in the Fall, says NC garden store ownerOak Ridge Shrubbery said there are few perennials that bloom all summer, but that mixing different perennials with bloom times gives off a unique color
By: Cindy Jones Which perennials bloom all summer? “There are few that will bloom all summer, but some like viola, Blue Buttery scabiosa and coreopsis will bloom for about 12 weeks with regular deadheading. Mixing perennials with different bloom times will give your backyard landscaping unique color all year long.” Should I cut back my perennials in the fall or spring? “It’s best to cut back dead foliage in the fall, as this will prevent organisms from “wintering in” over dead and decaying leaves.” Why don’t mine look as nice as the ones in the catalog photos? “It will take up to three years for newly planted perennials to mature.” What should I do when they stop blooming? “So they don’t interfere with the rest of your landscaping, prune back the stems so the plant gains a cleaner, neater appearance. This also might encourage it to re-bloom.” How should I mulch? “Shredded cedar or mini nuggets are great choices. Spread it about 3 inches deep and avoid mulching too close to the plants crowns so your flowers won’t experience crown rot.” Oak Ridge Shrubbery has a wide variety of Winston Salem NC perennials to choose from.
