Comic-Con 2011 - Professional Corel Painter
Q&A with Artist Doug A. Sirois

> 1) Introduce yourself - what is your background?

Hello my name is Doug Sirois and I am a fantasy illustrator. I grew up in Massachusetts and earned a BFA from The Art Institute of Boston in 2001.
I moved to California and started freelancing in 2002 and earned an MFA from CalState, Fullerton. As an illustrator, I wear many hats. In comics, I am working on various books as a colorist and painter over other artists. I also fully illustrate graphic novels. I am currently working on 2 children's books, 6 different graphic novels projects some with Image Comics and others with some indy publishers. I am also doing concept art for films with Erik von Wodtke, a development producer, at Edge of L.A. Productions. We are working on some fantasy films such an epic animated feature called Santa's Helper and a vampire thriller called The Romanian Tomb. I am an educator as well teaching illustration for various schools and online environments.

> 2) Explain using Corel Painter as a tool to establish science fiction and fantasy paintings within a grounded natural world.

Corel Painter is a great tool for establishing the look and feel of traditional artwork. The oil paints in this program feel and look like oil paints. Blending colors is very naturalistic and mimics traditional methods of painting. If I am developing a fantasy painting Corel Painter has some effects that helps push the special effects, allowing me to create otherworldly elements in the context of a realistic painting. That's the idea bout fantasy illustration, to create a world rooted in realism, but with a magical twist. It goes the same way with Science Fiction illustration. We want the viewers to believe that this stuff actually exists! Painter gives the artist the chance to paint in a traditional method, but gives the opportunity to do techniques not easily executed in traditional mediums.

> 3) What do you have going on at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con?

On Friday from 12-1 at The Corel/Wacom booth I will be doing a demo in Corel Painter. I will be speaking about some various tools or techniques that I use to create imagery. The content will come from a fantasy painting that I will have in progress during the show.
I am also very excited about this years show, as I will be sharing a booth with a veteran illustrator Greg Spalenka. Our individual styles seem to compliment each other nicely. I am super enthusiastic about making art next to and possibly with Greg for 4 days. I will have prints, comics, and t-shirts available for purchase or someone can come by and commission an original sketch or painting. It should be fun!
