Community Games experience for Coventry schoolHundreds of school children have taken part in a London 2012-inspired day of sport and celebration.
The children demonstrated their creative sides by performing their own colourful opening and closing ceremonies as well as taking part in 26 different sporting activities including sprinting, long jump, javelin and football. Double Olympian Dave Long also visited the event at the school, on Coat of Arms Bridge Road, to share his experiences with the pupils. Chris Rose, headteacher at Stivichall Primary School, said: “We host a sports event every year, but in anticipation of London 2012 we decided this year we would take part in the Community Games. “We are celebrating the Olympics and Paralympic themes throughout the year and encouraging the children to get involved in physical activity. “Our sports day has always been a Community Games to an extent. The local secondary school Finham Park usually help and the parents of the children join in the activities.” The Community Games is inspired by London 2012 and is part of the Cultural Olympiad. As the one year to go until London 2012 mark approaches, Legacy Trust UK, who fund the Community Games Programme, are aiming for 500 Community Games to be held across the West Midlands before the end of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. CSW Sport is aiming to support communities wishing to host their own Community Games during the run up to London 2012. The organisation will be hosting a number of training workshops as well as offering support and guidance on how to organise events. A community could be a street, an estate, work colleagues, groups, a sports team, faith group, school and much more. Tracy Murphy, from CSW Sport, said: “With London 2012 fast-approaching we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate sport and culture like never before. “The Community Games is the perfect way to bring the magic and inspiration of London 2012 into a community and allow them to engage with the Games while also celebrating the positive aspects of their community. “We want as many people as possible host their own Community Games and we would urge anyone who is interested in doing so to get in touch to find out how we can help.” For more information on hosting a Community Games, and for details of the support available visit www.communitygames.org.uk, contact Tracy Murphy on 02476 574441 or email tracy@cswsport.org.uk.
