Reduction of Window Period by using 4th Generation Human Immunodeficiency Virus Screening Test
By: Dr Chawla

July 17, 2011 - PRLog -- HIV is human immuno deficiency virus. It is the virus which finally causes AIDS(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). The mean period between getting the HIV infection and developing full blown AID’s infection is 8-9 years.
According to estimates from the UNAIDS Global reports 2010,around 30.8 million adults and around 2.5 million children ware living with HIV at the ens of 2009.
Since the introduction of first tests for HIV in 1985,the performance of the test have continued to enhance. The time frame between 1st generation test and 4th generation tests have considerably been reduced. We can now detect the HIV Virus ,using the combination of HIV Ag(Antigen) and Ab(Antibody) within less than 2 weeks.
The detection of p24 antigen, detects some of HIV infection cases before the antibodies are produced, shortening the window period in which people may test negative, despite having infection.
The 4th generation tests are capable of detection of HIV infection several days earlier than HIV antibodies.
