The Patriots are Coming! Print or Pixels?A small band of conservative journalists in Los Angeles launch a family magazine that blends 18th-century American history with 21st-century perspective. No donkeys or elephants or party politics. Just patriots, then and now.
By: Karen L. Kenney Imagine sitting at a dining table listening to the patriot farmer reading the Declaration of Independence to his children. Imagine you sitting next to him reading it from your laptop. Welcome to the inaugural edition of "The Patriots Almanac". "We want to offer families with school-aged children an opportunity to meet, know and learn from our Founding Fathers," says Karen Kenney, coordinator of the San Fernando Valley Patriots near Los Angeles, and publisher of the magazine. The first edition sports an Independence Day theme. It includes a "Junior Patriots" page with paper-and-pencil games, a centerfold on Thomas Jefferson and Monticello and essays on America's current national debt. "Our goal is to get accurate early American history into kitchens, living rooms and classrooms in an entertaining and informative way," she adds. "We don't think children are learning the fullness of civics and Founding principles in daily life today." The magazine is published by the San Fernando Valley Patriots, Inc., a non-profit social welfare group. "The Patriots Almanac" is available in both print and digital formats.
