June 29, 2011 - PRLog -- June 29, 2011 – The prostate is a walnut-sizes gland, made of two regions enclosed by an outer layer of the tissue, in the male reproductive system. And prostatectomy is the partial or complete surgical removal of the prostate gland. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra and the canal through which urine is passed out. So the prostate abnormalities like a tumor or an enlarged gland can restrict the normal flow of urine along the urethra and hence, prostate surgery is required. Docturs.com/dd gives the detailed information about all the types of prostate surgeries.

There are many types of prostatectomy surgeries like radical prostatectomy, open prostatectomy, simple prostatectomy. Radical prostatectomy is a surgery used to remove the whole prostate gland and some tissues around it, mainly to treat prostate cancer. There are 4 sub-types of this type of surgery: radical retropubic prostatectomy, radical perineal prostatectomy, laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. These procedures take around 3 to 4 hours and it is carried out under general anesthesia or local anesthesia is used to numb the lower half of the body - spinal or epidural anesthesia.

The prostatectomy procedure involves the removal of the prostate gland from the surrounding tissue and sometimes, even the seminal vesicles and two small fluid filled sacs are removed. The surgery has to be done very carefully as there should be no damage done to the nerves and the blood vessels. Many surgeons also remove lymph nodes in the pelvis to check for cancer and re-attach the urethra to the bladder neck. A drain called Jackson-Pratt drain may be left in the belly for the extra fluids post surgery. Lastly, a tube or urinary catheter is left in the bladder to drain the urine.

Generally, this procedure is performed in the case of localized prostate cancer, where cancer has not spread beyond the prostate gland. There are also alternative treatments like hormone therapy, external beam radiation therapy, cryotherapy of the prostate and implant radiation therapy. The choice of a particular therapy or a treatment option depends upon the type of cancer and its risk factors, age and other medical problems, consideration of side-effects of every treatment and the spread of prostate cancer.
