Flea Application

Salem - Oregon - US

June 25, 2011 - PRLog -- With the flea and tick season upon us ThriftyPetSupply thought that information on how to correctly use topical flea medications would be a great discussion topic for new and experienced pet owners. Topical flea drops provide fantastic flea control for cats and dogs provided they are used correctly. ThriftyPetSupply has gathered a few basic rules to ensure you get the most from any topical dog or cat flea treatment. Since your pet needs to be completely dry before the application, ThriftyPetSupply has found that you should not bathe your pet 48 hours before applying the medication. You will also want to make sure you wait at least 48 hours until after the application to bathe your pet. Many vets recommend this because it will allow the flea medication to completely absorb into your pets skin.

Firstly, make sure you have the right flea treatment for the right pet. Each product comes in different doses for different sizes of cats and dogs. Using a 'small dog' dose on a large dog will mean your pet is not fully protected from fleas and ticks. Doing the reverse means exposing your small dog to more chemicals than he or she needs. Using a dog flea treatment on a cat can be dangerous as some contain chemicals which are perfectly safe for canines but very toxic to felines.

Secondly, relax! Take time to relax your pet or you can guarantee they'll make a run for it right at the crucial moment!

Thirdly, part the hair between the shoulder blades to expose a good patch of skin. Empty the flea drops directly onto the skin, not the fur. If there is too much liquid for the amount of skin you can see, use a little and wait for it to soak in before applying the rest.

Finally, you are done. However, keep your pet close for a half hour or so, to ensure they do not rub or lick off the recently applied flea drops. Try not to handle them too much for the next few hours as you want all that flea killing power to stay on their skin, not be transferred to yours. ThriftyPetSupply has found that taking your dog on a walk without other pets is a great way to let the Flea Medication soak in and dry, while keeping your pet occupied at the same time. Oh, it’s also a great excuse to just take a walk with your pet! If your pet does lick some of the dog or cat flea treatment off, then don’t panic. Most pets show no reaction to such non-ideal behavior. But do keep an eye on them just in case they have an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients.

Applying Flea and Tick Medication to your pets is an easy task, which is straight forward enough for any pet owner to accomplish. However, as simple as it is, pet owners often get too busy or forget to treat their pets in the correct time frame. ThriftyPetSupply posted a story on our Facebook page about the bubonic plague spreading through pets and fleas in Eastern Oregon about three weeks ago. We wanted to remind everyone that this disease is still around and can be prevented with the proper Flea and Tick treatments. For you and your pet’s sake, please be sure to get their treatment up to date if you haven’t already done so.
Always Remember.
