Sugar free cakes are great cakes for diabetics

June 22, 2011 - PRLog -- National diabetes week is approaching, which is a week that is dedicated to raising awareness of this disease through a variety of fundraising events. This year, National Diabetes Week runs from the 12th June to the 18th June.

This particular disease, which can be life threatening is worryingly, one of the most common diseases amongst the British population. Since 1996, the number of diabetics living in the country has alarmingly risen from 1.4 million to 2.6 million.  And health experts predict that by 2025 more than four million people will have developed the disease- the majority of which will have type 2 diabetes.  This is primarily due to two factors; that the British population is getting older, as well as more and more overweight and obese.

To control the condition diabetes sufferers have to follow a strict diet to maintain a healthy blood sugar level. Former Spice Girl Mel C is an avid supporter of Diabetes UK and their work as her younger brother has suffered from Type 1 diabetes from an early age. Stephen Dixon, who presents Sky news is also on board this year and has suffered from type 1 diabetes since he was 17.  Cheryl Fergison, who plays Heather Trott in hit BBC soap Eastenders suffers from Type 2 diabetes and has long been a supporter of the diabetes charity. Former GMTV present Eamon Holmes also supports Diabetes UK since his mother has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.  Finally comedian Joe Pasquale and television presenter Phillip Schofield also back the charity as both of their families suffer from various strains of the disease.
