French authorities reaffirm cranberry health claim

Government agency says 36 mg of PAC, the active ingredient in cranberries, can inhibit the ability of bacteria to stick to the urinary tract. Consumers should look for cranberry products that have 36 mg PAC, as measured by the BL-DMAC method.

June 13, 2011 - PRLog -- French food safety authorities (ANSES) have reaffirmed the 2004 decision that cranberry products with 36 mg of PACs (the active ingredient in cranberries known as proanthocyanidins) “reduce the adherence of certain E. coli bacteria to the urinary tract walls.”

ANSES issued the statement in May upholding its original ruling in 2004 (by then AFSSA) that said the health claim is based on studies using products with 36 mg PACs and could be made by products that meet that standard. This comes following a decision from the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) that specified products using the health claim must use the BL-DMAC method of PAC measurement.

Consumers seeking cranberry products that meet these criteria should look for labeling that includes the phrase, “36 mg PAC BL-DMAC.” Cranberry is the first fruit in the world to be recognized with an official health claim, and research continues to show its effectiveness in promoting and maintaining a healthy urinary tract.

That’s why Atlanta-based Trophikos, LLC is proud to bring ellura™ to the United States. Known throughout the world as Urell®, ellura is the world’s only cranberry supplement supported by a government health claim. With 36 mg of cranberry PACs as measured by the BL-DMAC method, ellura provides the proven effective dose in a once-daily capsule.

Chrissy Warren, director of medical affairs for Trophikos, commented that a tremendous amount of research had taken place since the 2004 original ANSES ruling that the agency reviewed the body of cranberry data again. “It’s impressive that such an important body has reviewed and reaffirmed the statement they made,” Warren said. “It’s one more piece of evidence for what we already know – that ellura works. This should give physicians and consumers more confidence in ellura.”

The PACs in ellura attach themselves to bacteria, so the bacteria cannot stick to the inside of the urinary tract. When the bacteria cannot stick, they’re simply flushed out of the body. That leaves a healthier urinary tract for a happier you!

ellura is now available for purchase online at www.myellura.com or by phone at 1-877-421-7160.
