Sumter is also at or above the state average for the percent of students proficient in reading, math and science in all grade levels.  The most significant school gains in percentage points of students scoring level 3 and above are at Lake Panasoffkee Elementary with an eleven point increase in fourth grade math, South Sumter Middle with a ten point increase in eighth grade math and Wildwood Middle High School with twelve point increase in eleventh grade Science.

Much of the district’s success can be attributed to the efforts of Sumter’s teachers who have been involved in intensive training in Learning Focused Solutions and Writers in Control.  These initiatives were implemented district wide beginning in 2006.  Both initiatives involve strategic use of strategies proven to improve student achievement.  Superintendent Rick Shirley said, “These are preliminary scores including all curriculum groups.  Based on these initial scores, congratulations are in order for our teachers, students, administrators and staff for providing such a sound educational foundation. However, we still have some work to do in several areas.”
