Follow on Google News | Savannah Walk to End Alzheimer’s Selects Local ChairmenMioshei Mobley, a community service representative with Home Instead Senior Care, and Cathy Rodgers, with Seven Waves Marketing, will head up organization of the October 15th Walk to End Alzheimer's in Savannah, GA.
Mobley has worked within the Savannah healthcare industry for many years while volunteering with Alzheimer’s, and Rodgers has begun her second year of volunteer service. Both attended a Georgia Walk to End Alzheimer’s conference in March, where they saw the new brand rolled out. The annual walk has a new look and name this year with rebranding for the signature fundraiser. Formerly known as the Memory Walk, the new name aligns the goal of discovering treatment and a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, now “Walk To End Alzheimer’s” “We are excited about the new look for our walk this year, and having two community minded people like Mioshei and Cathy who really care about our cause will help to make our walk a success,” said Development Director Jami Murray, Alzheimer’s disease is currently the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and the fifth leading cause of death for those aged 65 and older. Deaths from Alzheimer have increased 66 percent between 2000 and 2008, while deaths from other major diseases, (heart disease and breast cancer) decreased. In 2011, the cost of caring for those with Alzheimer’s to American society will total an estimated $183 billion. This is an $11 billion increase over last year – a rate of increase more than four times inflation. The Savannah Walk to End Alzheimer’s will step off on Saturday, October 15, from Johnson Square. The Coastal Georgia Regional office of the Alzheimer’s Association reaches 15 area counties by providing programs and services for family caregivers. Many programs are complimentary and include: 24 hour Helpline, Education and Training, 11 Support Groups, Safe Return/Medic Alert, Caregiver Time-Out and the Caring Closet program. Every 69 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
