Grow sales – organically!

Trust is probably the key factor in business to business sales. New research has shown that plants have a positive impact on the behaviour of humans with regards trust and collaboration; however they need to be well maintained.

May 16, 2011 - PRLog -- It has long been known that plants benefit an office environment in many ways including emitting oxygen and cleaning the air. They also make an office conducive to productivity and employee happiness by helping to remove stress. Workers' perceptions of overall life quality, the work they perform and job satisfaction take a boost. Time taken to tend to them can also provide a change of mind set that can be used for focussed day dreaming or mind-wandering, which is potentially highly creative. All these and many more benefits of surrounding the office in plants are benefits that seem to be very positive reasons for their introduction, but are they tangible to the bottom line? Now there is even more evidence to use our green friends throughout the work-place that could potentially directly impact the turnover or profit margin.

Recent research has now linked well-kept vegetation with trust. If we see well maintained gardens or plants we are more likely to have a positive impression of the owners and their attitude. Scientists exposed photos of homes to volunteers and determined that the better the gardens looked, the more the subjects trusted the owners. They also concluded that disorder can lead to distrust, which may discourage cooperation.  Once we are presented with this information it seems strikingly obvious from the negative aspect – lack of care and maintenance of the office plants could display a lack of attention to detail or an acceptance of sub-standard quality. But, there is also the middle ground of having no office plants! Both of these situations could be missing out on the sub-conscious influence of building trust – or they could even be damaging it.

So, if you want to appear to be trustworthy that may just help you close that next sale – make sure you have a well-kept garden at the entrance to your building; healthy plants throughout all the offices especially in any meeting rooms; and regularly care for them by either giving time to the employees to perform the maintenance or by hiring an external sub-contractor.

The environment plus the mind set of employees is a key element within the Behaviour Map tier of the Theory of Excellence, which provides a framework to take the latest research and realise benefit from it by applying it to business. The Theory of Excellence can be used to impact performance either culturally or operationally in areas such as sales, creativity, projects, change management, team building or just improving the attitudes of employees towards the organisation.
