May 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Eating disorder treatment centers are known to handle many cases of children who suffer from two of the major problems of eating disorders: bulimia and anorexia nervosa. It is surprising to find that children who should eat all the healthy things, tend to be blinded by the constant media blitz that propagate diet habits that hint towards being anorexic or bulimics.

Both kinds of eating disorders, bulimia and anorexia nervosa can trigger many types of health issues according to the data provided by various eating disorder treatment centers. Some of the diseases that can manifest include liver problems, kidney problems, skin diseases, breathlessness, auto immune diseases, heart failure and even death. Let us look at both anorexia and bulimia in an isolated manner and find out what are the negative effects that can transpire due to each of these eating disorders:

Anorexia

Anorexia is a disorder in which the person begins to avoid food, living in a state of self-denial, believing that taking even a morsel more can increase her weight. Here are some of the consequences of being anorexic.

• Anemia or lack of iron in blood leading to weakness, low stamina and lethargy

• Low blood pressure, low pulse rate, fluctuating heart-rate.

• Swollen joints

• Chances of menopause to strike is faster in women who are anorexics

• Loss of periods

• Weak bones; it is believed that girls who are anorexic tend to suffer from osteoporosis and arthritis to a higher degree than women who are built normally or are fit enough

• Presence of soft body hair on the skin, also known as lanugo hair.

• Lack of focus at work or study

Bulimia

Bulimia is a disorder due to which a person overeats and then purges it through self-induced vomiting, laxatives, over-exercising and fasting. Constant abuse of the body by laxatives, diuretics ( to force urination) and vomiting can weaken the body considerably and put a strain on various processes of the body

Here are some of the effects of being bulimic

1. Depletion of vital minerals in the body, like potassium and zinc

2. Low immunity, a breeding ground for health problems like fever

3. Loss of periods(for girls)

4. Body odor and bad breath

5. Stomach pain, bloating and cramps

6. Stretched throat tissues and salivary glands due to excess vomiting

Puberty as we know is a crucial phase in a child's physical, mental and sexual growth. Playing havoc with one's health and abusing food can lead to complicated set of problems. It is better to be safe than sorry; visit a good eating disorder rehab for your child where there is expert help at hand. You can benefit from the services of doctors, nutritionists, counselors and psychiatrists who are there to provide all the information, guidance and treatment for better diet and lifestyle for your growing child. So do not harbor any kind of idol-worship especially with regards to being waif-like by sacrificing on your food or feeling guilty about food. Eat sensibly but make sure you eat everything that has vital nutrients for your body; this is something which all eating disorder treatment centers agree with.
