Lawrence & Leigh Release “Glow” Music Video

"The trip-hoppy-1940s-magic they pulled set off Stokes’ vocals and Kalleen’s intricate compositions, proving the pair hypnotizing. I look forward to seeing them continue to kick ass, and you should, too." – The Steam Co.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Apr. 29, 2011) — New York duo Lawrence & Leigh not only produce dazzling dreamy pop, they also create stunning visual art as well. Andrew Kalleen and Kristin Stokes merge these two arts in their painstakingly created video which features stop-motion animation, beautiful desert scenes, and of course, the protean song, “Glow”. As with everything Lawrence & Leigh do, both contribute equally essential parts: Stokes, puppetry; Kalleen, photography and editing with concept and design being a shared vision. We follow the protagonist, a puppet (manipulated so that his "still" face seems to somehow change expression appropriate to his situation), as he moves through a series of beautiful worlds—each with its own unique style and purpose. Corresponding with each of these worlds are the sharply contrasting, yet strangely complimenting sections of the song; a lush, exploratory intro, built on overdubbed choirs of the two's voices, moves unexpectedly to an electronic, beat-heavy pop anthem, and then ends in 1960's style indie/jazz with driving piano, brushed drums, and doo-wop backing vocals. The images and sounds are so well-meshed, it’s hard to imagine one without the other after you’ve watched once. “Glow” is now available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_d...
This is not the first time Lawrence & Leigh have enchanted viewers with beautiful images accompanying their music. Their video for “Chelsea Nights,” featured on Magnet’s Film at 11, was filmed in a decaying, yet beautiful abandoned power plant in upstate New York. Justin Lange, the film-maker behind this gorgeous video created a version of the Cretan Labyrinth myth complete with string marking the convoluted paths Lawrence & Leigh take.

Lawrence & Leigh are not the sort of artists who wait for inspiration to come before producing great work. The duo spend their time, thought and energy creating and perfecting their music. The result of this hard work is beautiful and bold, with a refreshing originality and an infectious sense of style. The duo’s first major undertaking, entitled Odyssey, is a set of three EPs, each with its own distinct sound and character. The first release, which has been a year in the making, is in fact the final chapter, Volume III: Hills and Masts. Hills and Masts was released March 7th.

Like some kind of wondrous blend of Dirty Projectors and the haunting richness of Fleet Foxes, the female/male band of Andrew Kalleen and Kristin Stokes fill their music with dazzling styles of pop, colored with a dream-like nostalgia, and realized to their fullest potential in the studio. With dense harmonies and elaborate song structures, the time spent meticulously fleshing out every detail has paid off. Lawrence and Leigh have created an album that fluidly progresses from each passing sound with impressive dynamics and energy. All the songs are absolutely individuals, with their own form, color, and intention. Yet the album remains cohesive through a melancholy yet optimistic¬ tone, and a sense that each song takes you on a ride somewhere you had never anticipated arriving.

Praise for Lawrence & Leigh

"One thing they're not is a typical folk duo...The music of Andrew Kalleen and Kristin Stokes seems to reinvent itself after every listen..."
--The Deli

"There isn't a moment on Hills and Masts that isn't engaging...You'd even swear that Elliot Smith appeared momentarily to haunt 'Heeled Shoes'."

"Coming across like a blend of Dirty Projectors, Joanna Newsom and the haunting richness of Fleet Foxes, the duo offer up dense harmonies and elaborate song structures with a melancholy yet occasionally optimistic tone."
--The Mad Mackerel

"MAGNET is proud to premiere the video for Vol. III standout "Chelsea Nights..."
--Magnet

"With light piano and Kristin Stokes’ chamber-hall-like echoing vocals, Lawrence & Leigh open “Chelsea Nights” in a dream-like state. Soon Andrew Kalleen takes over with crisp yet mellow, folk-ridden vocals. The listener is treated to a dreamy pop song, inundated with hints of 60s folk and infused with the free spirit of jazz."
