The Lies Business Owners Tell Themselves

Those in charge are never certain what is taking place inside their organization. In order to feel better, little white lies are told. Do any of these sound familiar to you?

March 28, 2011 - PRLog -- Our clients won’t leave us because they have been doing business with us for so long.  

We listen to all the suggestions we receive from our employees.

Team work is valued and rewarded.

Only people with initiative are allowed to work here.

The most important document we look at is the daily cash report.

Training is a waste of time and money for us, our managers and our employees.

We don’t have time to do performance evaluations for employees.

Our bank never makes mistakes.

Each department has a mission statement.

No one really needs to be oriented to a new job or to this company.

We communicate so often that people are sick of it.

Managers spend ample, uninterrupted time coaching their employees.

No one reads the manuals (policies) or handbooks (employees) so why should we update them.

We’ll never have a fire, flood, tornado, earthquake, or other emergency so why waste time doing a drill.

We can raise prices whenever we need to, or feel like it.

Recognition is a regular part of what we do around here.

Our managers and supervisors comply with all laws when they interview candidates.

We’ll never have a case of sexual harassment around here.

The succession plan is in place.

No one steals anything from this company.

We do regular cash flow forecasting.
Departmental objectives don’t conflict with other departments.

We value continuing education in our company.

Each quarter we review to see which products make us the most profit.  

Our meetings are useful and productive.

Sales people make at least three calls a day.

“Please”, “thank you”, and “you’re welcome” are used constantly.

The organizational chart is available to all employees.

We are not violating any wage and hour laws.

This company has some Big, Hairy, Audacious Goals.

There really isn’t any waste in our operation.

Every employee has their head in the game when it comes to work.

Our internal people spend time in the field with sales personnel and customers.  

We have a solid credit and collection process that we use.

The company has a twelve month rolling calendar for planning purposes.

Sales people spend at least 80 percent of their time with customers and prospects.

Performance appraisals don’t mean anything.

I understand my financial statements as well as my CPA.

There are no barriers between departments in this company.

There is not one software program on a company computer we don’t have the license for.

We don’t have any deadwood at this company.

Our employment application conforms to all laws.

We’re ready for anything the competition brings our way.

Every employee has met with a customer, face to face, recently.

We’ve streamlined the sales reporting process so sales people can spend more time with customers.

We focus on the “vital few” and not the trivial many around here.

Time cards don’t have to be checked because everyone is honest.

We’ve fired all the internal terrorists.

All of our senior managers have specific customer account responsibilities.

Our web site is updated constantly.

The strategic plan is in place and updated at least once each year.

We keep making it easier and easier for customers to do business with us.

The company has a policy on accepting gifts from vendors.

Marketing material is current.

We so many new products in the pipeline our sales people won’t know what to do.

Every telephone call is returned within 24 hours.

Our company could be described as lean and fast.

We don’t have problems around here we have opportunities.

Every employee has crystal clear expectations about what they are supposed to do.

Every employee is committed to doing quality work.

Employees are like family around here.

We have multiple sustainable competitive advantages.

Our customers are constantly surveyed for feedback and ideas.

At this company, we measure the right things, and only the right things.

Meetings around here are kept to a minimum.

When a potential customer contacts us for information, we send it out the same day.

Our facility is very clean and we wouldn’t hesitate for a single minute to have our best prospect walk into every room.

None of our managers runs out the door when the work day is over for nonexempt employees.
