Why to Buy an Organic Mattress & Organic Bedding- The Fundamentals to a Good Night's Rest

In recent years people have began asking questions about what is in their food, clothes, & even bedding. As the world’s health begins to decline, citizens begin to wonder how they can improve their health. The answer is simple; buy organic.

March 23, 2011 - PRLog -- It is no wonder why so many people are turning to natural and organic products and foods. There are so many harsh chemicals out there, that it seems like there should be a label for every little product out there. Most people already know the benefits of eating healthy, but what about sleeping healthy?

As time progresses people want to be more informed and that is a good thing, but sometimes what is discovered is sometimes scary, if not down right disappointing. It is important, however sad it is, to be informed. Especially when it comes to what you are sleeping in and on. So why buy organic mattresses and bedding? Well there are a few reasons that people should be concerned about what they are sleeping on. While non-organic and organic mattresses nearly always look exactly alike, what they offer is far different. The same goes for organic bedding and nonorganic bedding, although they may feel different, especially if comparing commercial cotton with environmentally friendly bamboo bedding. But the look is not what is at issue here.

Synthetic and commercially made mattresses and bedding both contain hundreds of toxic chemicals, including a known carcinogen, formaldehyde. (This is not the case for natural and organic bed materials.) All these chemicals are dangerous and can cause serious illnesses, including cancer. And the worst of it is that they are even more hazardous when the subjects are exposed to chemicals for prolonged periods. Considering most people like to get 8 hours of recommended sleep time, makes for a more obvious case. In just 5 years a person can be exposed to these chemicals for an estimated 14,600 hours.

Chemicals like formaldehyde are used as an adhesive, but these chemicals are not worth the risk, as these chemicals have been linked to lung, nose, and throat cancers as well as asthma and other respiratory problems, including increasing the risk of contracting bronchitis or pneumonia and leukemia. But formaldehyde is not the only adversary. Polyurethane foam, a petroleum-based material, can also cause respiratory problems, as well as skin irritation. This material is more often found in crib mattresses, exposing infants to the damaging fumes. Polyurethane foam is under investigation, as it has been linked to an increase in childhood cancers.

If people are still not convinced then they should consider that conventionally grown cotton consumes an estimated 25% of the insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world. These insecticides and pesticides have also been linked to cancers, skin irritation, and respiratory problems. Conventional farming gulps down roughly a third of a pound of pesticides and fertilizers to produce a single tee shirt. That is not only alarming, but also inexplicable.

All these chemicals are, if not deadly, in the least damaging and can cause numerous problems, from cancer to sleep apnea. So if people are searching for a good nights rest, they should start with the material that their beds are made from. The first thing is to look for organic mattresses, or mattresses made from a natural source. By choosing an organic or natural mattress that is chemical free, people will increase their likelihood of good health and sound sleep.

Organic mattresses are usually made from organic wool, cotton, or natural latex rubber. The benefit of these mattresses is that they are soft and comfortable just like the other beds, but also naturally flame resistant. Organic mattresses, or ones that are covered with bamboo or organic bedding also repel dust mites, resist mold and mildew, but more importantly, are hypoallergenic. This allows for improved quality sleep and breathing.

The next thing is to use natural or organic bedding. There are many choices ranging from organic cotton, wool and bamboo. By choosing organically grown materials, all the benefits of comfort are intact as well as minimizing the harm to people and the planet. In fact bamboo is harvested and replenished with no impact to the environment. It can be selectively harvested annually, plus it is capable of complete regeneration without the need to replant. Some species of bamboo can even grow as much as four feet a day. Bamboo also helps convert 35% more greenhouse gasses than stand of trees of the same density.

So as people inform themselves of the dangers of pesticides, insecticides, formaldehyde, polyurethane foam, and hundreds of other harsh chemicals, there is a demand for healthier alternatives, because, face it, who wants to be sleeping on a toxic concoction that has been linked to cancer and other health risks? Anyone?
