Chemicals like formaldehyde are used as an adhesive, but these chemicals are not worth the risk, as these chemicals have been linked to lung, nose, and throat cancers as well as asthma and other respiratory problems, including increasing the risk of contracting bronchitis or pneumonia and leukemia. But formaldehyde is not the only adversary. Polyurethane foam, a petroleum-based material, can also cause respiratory problems, as well as skin irritation. This material is more often found in crib mattresses, exposing infants to the damaging fumes. Polyurethane foam is under investigation, as it has been linked to an increase in childhood cancers.

If people are still not convinced then they should consider that conventionally grown cotton consumes an estimated 25% of the insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides used in the world. These insecticides and pesticides have also been linked to cancers, skin irritation, and respiratory problems. Conventional farming gulps down roughly a third of a pound of pesticides and fertilizers to produce a single tee shirt. That is not only alarming, but also inexplicable.

All these chemicals are, if not deadly, in the least damaging and can cause numerous problems, from cancer to sleep apnea. So if people are searching for a good nights rest, they should start with the material that their beds are made from. By choosing an organic or natural mattress that is chemical free, people will increase their likelihood of good health and sound sleep.
