March 9, 2011 - PRLog -- Planar waveguide circuit (PWC) modules are used in optical communication applications. Industry analysts at ElectroniCast forecast worldwide planar waveguide circuit, PWC-based module consumption to increase to $5.9 billion by 2015. The global consumption value of PWC modules will increase concurrently robustly increasing quantity growth, albeit declining average prices will be a partially offsetting factor. The consumption value of integrated multifunction PWC modules held nearly 60 percent of the market share in 2010. According to the study, integrated multifunction PWC modules are forecast to hold over 70% of total global consumption value in 2015.

What are planar lightwave circuits (PLCs)?
A PLC is a generic term used to refer to an optical circuit with a light waveguide. It is formed on the surface of a substrate in the same way as an electronic integrated circuit (IC) by using technologies such as thin-film formation, dry etching, and photolithography. The substrate material is silicon while silica glass is used for the waveguide. The benefits of PLC is its ability to provide a low-loss connection with optical fiber considering both PLC and optical fiber are made of silica and have micrometer-sized cores. Since all functions can essentially be performed on a single PWC chip, planar technology provides for a much tighter density of components, which enables the end result to be a considerably smaller device while reducing the footprint on OEM manufacturers’ equipment.

What’s discussed in this report?

Worldwide review of 2010 PWC-based modules market
2011 – 2015 PWC module market forecast by device function: array waveguides (AWG) modules; PWC photonic switch modules; PWC-based VOA modules; PLC splitter; PWC-based integrate multifunction modules and other PWC-based modules
Fiber optic communication networks
Planar lightwave circuit/ Waveguide technology
Select PWC competitors
