By: Roger Labbe My name is Roger Labbe. I have been involved within every phase of construction since I was 10years old—I am now 47. I had the privilege when I was younger of working with some of the most talented and successful craftsman that you can imagine. Conversely, I worked for one that wasn't so talented and successful. What I have discovered with truly successful business people is that they implement and abide by some basic rules and principles when dealing with people. These rules are going to seem trivial and maybe even seem ridiculous at first glance—but they cannot and should not be under estimated. The level of distrust and disrespect within our society is unlike anything I have ever seen before. This unfortunate state of affairs is even more evident between the homeowner and a contractor—or a contractor looking to potentially do some work for the home owner. Here are a couple of basic tips on what a contractor/small business person can do to help assuage some of that negativity and distrust and to start off on the right foot. First one is, when a potential customer calls you up on the phone to get a free estimate---be respectful and appreciative that they called you. It never ceases to amaze me how many contractors start off on the wrong foot by addressing potential customers as if they were their drinking buddies. For example, when a potential customer is looking to set up a time for you to come by their house to give a free estimate, you ask them, “when is a good or convenient time for you”? At the very end of that phone call, right before you’re about to hang up with them, you say, “thanks for calling and have nice day”. That little exchange when done properly and sincerely starts you off positively with the home owner. Another thing that contractors tend to minimize the importance of is when you set a time with the potential customer to come by and give a free estimate, get there very close if not exactly to that time that was agreed upon. These principles alone have landed me more work in the past then you can possibly imagine. So many contractors don't fully grasp or understand the gravity of this. When a home owner (or any individual for that matter) is shown a high level of respect and “sincere” gratitude, the majority of the time they will want to reward the disseminator of that respect and appreciation. This is especially true for home owners that were not shown this by other contractors they were in contact with. These were just a couple of very basic and simple principles that successful contractors intuitively implement every day in their dealings with people. In the coming weeks, I will discuss some more in-depth laws and principles that will make you a true rock star with customers—or potential ones.
