March 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Among its full range of renewable heating systems at this year’s Ecobuild exhibition Smith’s Environmental Systems (SES) will be showcasing its air-to-water heat pump and water-to-water heat pump systems that include photovoltaic and thermal (PV-Therm) hybrid panels.  Smith’s claims that its water-to-water heat pump system with PV-Therm panels which generate both electricity and domestic hot water for heating, is the most efficient system of its kind in the UK.

The system specialist, which established its reputation with the manufacture of whisper-quiet, environmentally friendly fan convectors, has partnered with German renewables specialist Solarzentrum to introduce the PV-Therm panels to the UK. The PV-Therm panels are a combination of photovoltaic (PV) technology (which converts sunlight into electricity) and solar thermal technology (which takes heat from the sun to heat a transfer fluid.)

Working with the company’s recently launched Ecolectric water-to-water heat pump unit, SES believes that the PV-Therm-based system could represent a step change for sustainable domestic heating and hot water.  The heat pump has been specially designed so that there is minimal vibration and virtually no noise.  This low vibration means that the heat pump is compact and quiet enough to be stored indoors.  The pump uses a compressor that provides constant hot water for the heating and hot water systems using an indirect cylinder.  The transfer fluid keeps the PV-Therm panel at an optimal temperature for maximum electricity generation.

Eco Slimstream down projection fan convectors connect to the heat pump as an alternative to traditional radiators.  Each Eco Slimstream unit has a number of benefits, including:

•   carries 5% of the water required by a radiator of the same output
•   quick action room thermostat for better control
•   low surface temperature
•   no heat loss - all heat is projected into the room
•   draws ambient air from the middle of the room thus eliminating drafts at floor level
•   lighter and smaller than a traditional panel radiator
•   specially designed to reduce the amount of wall space required
•   easy installation

The can also be integrated with a variety of widely available solar products.  The 4.5kW Ecolectric system is the first air source heat pump in development from Smith’s Environmental Systems; higher output models will also be rolled-out at a later stage.

Gary Webster, Managing Director of Smith’s Environmental Systems, commented: “Solar PV-Therm panels comply with the Feed-in tariffs, so they also offer homeowners the chance to sell energy back to the grid if needed.  By combining the panels with our own heat pumps and fan convectors, which are all manufactured in the UK, we really are offering the ultimate in energy efficient central heating.  This is a totally green heating system that is set to revolutionise the way in which fan convectors are viewed in relation to renewable technologies.”

The Ecolectric systems are is available nationally, direct from Smith’s Environmental Systems.
