411-Pain Gives Elementary School Students the Gift of Reading

(Miami, Fla.) – More than 400 students each received a gift today that will allow many of them to take a new book home for the first time.  Thanks to a cash donation from 411-Pain, a lawyer referral service and national network of therapy centers to help injured people, students at Dr. Henry W. Mack Elementary School in Miami will be able to attend their Scholastic Book Fair with $5 gift certificates.

Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho and Principal Martha Harris encouraged the students to read during a school assembly to kick off the 411-Pain Scholastic Read and Rise literacy campaign in partnership with Scholastic Book Fairs and Clear Channel.

“Studies have shown that children who read at home every day do better in school,” said Harris.

“We are so grateful for the donation from 411-Pain.  Many of our students have never had their own brand new books to take home.”

411-Pain owners Dr. Robert Lewin and Dr. Mark Cereceda presented a check for $2,120 to Carvalho and Harris at the event.  “When students have more access to reading materials they have a greater chance to succeed in school,” said Dr. Lewin. “We are proud to sponsor this program and help kids get ahead.”

Principal Harris explained that today’s assembly is the beginning of a year-long campaign at her school to encourage students to become lifelong readers.  Other activities will include reading contests, incentive programs, meetings for parents and a book fair.

“411-Pain’s donation is helping us jumpstart an essential literacy campaign aimed at engaging the whole family in the love of reading,” she said.

Fifth grader Themsen Marcleus, 11, is the school’s top reader, having logged 11 books in the last 18 weeks, not including the first Harry Potter book.   “Reading is fun,” said the star student sporting a bright red tie and crisp white shirt. He is also a member of the school’s elite role model group and says his favorite books are the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.

411-Pain has committed $60,000 to the Read and Rise program in low income schools in both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.  The company’s principals also presented another check for $60,000 for the 411-Pain Cash for Teachers Contest, which awards $1,000 per month to a teacher in each county, culminating with a May grand prize of $11,000 for each district. Essays of up to 400 words can be submitted at clearchannel.com or on the 411-Pain Facebook page.
