Notter, Interim Principal Vicki Flournoy and representatives from 411-Pain, Scholastic Book Fairs and Clifford, the Big Red Dog. WHAT: As part of 411-Pain’s $120,000 commitment to Miami-Dade and Broward public schools, all 705 students at Rock Island Elementary will each receive a $5 gift certificate to buy new books at the Scholastic Book Fair. For many of the students this will be their first time to buy their own books. Students will assemble for the launch of the school’s 1-800-411-Pain Scholastic Read and Rise program, which is also sponsored by Clear Channel, and helps students develop a love of reading. Superintendent Notter and Principal Flournoy will discuss the importance of reading every day and announce special reading incentives. Notter will read to third grade students in the school cafeteria, while other students watch on screens in their classrooms. 411-Pain will present a check for $3,525 to fund the reading program and another check for $60,000 for the 411-Pain Cash for Teachers Contest, which awards $1,000 per month to a Broward teacher. The contest culminates with a May grand prize of $11,000. Essays of up to 400 words can be submitted at clearchannel.com or on the 411-Pain Facebook page.
