DCF Kickoff Event "BackPack Buddies" Friday, February 18, 2011, 4pm - 6pm

Feb. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- DCF will host the first food drive for the BackPack Buddies program held at Hunter Elementary School 1018 E. Davie Street,  at the corner of Tarboro and Davie Street.  Tax Deductible donations can also be made onsite during the food drive on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2011. The food drive runs from 4  til 6pm.
 
A list of items tailored made for the BackPack Buddy program include:

Cheese & Crackers – PB&J, or Individual Cheese & Cracker packs (6 count or more)
Ravioli  - Individual easy-open or pop-top cans (15 ounce or more)
Fruit Cups - Individual cups with pull-top cans or plastic cups (4 ounce or more)
Cookies - Individually wrapped single-serve cookies
Fruit Snacks - Individual pouches with assorted flavors but made with real fruit juice (9 ounce or more)
Granola Bars - Nature’s Valley, Nutri-Grain, Quaker Oats (single or double bars)
Fruit Juice - Individual juice boxes with 100% juice-no added sugar (6 fluid ounces or more)
Snack Packs - Individual snack packs pudding cups in any flavor
Vienna Sausage - Individual pop-top can, chicken or traditional (5 ounces or more)
Bottled Water - Individual bottles (12 fluid ounce or more)

For future reference, The BackPack Buddies program is designed to help meet the nutritional needs of children at risk of hunger during non-school hours, specifically weekends and holidays. This program targets those children who participate in federal child nutrition food programs during the school days, but who do not have access to such programs on weekends and holidays. Through this program, participating kids will be given special backpacks once each week that will be filled  with nonperishable food which can be used to meet their weekend nutritional needs.

DCF is a nonprofit organization that provides academic and educational services for boys only from age 8 through 21. This program provides access to study & life skills, cultural enrichment and job training for those who have the desire and drive to excel.
