Follow on Google News | Adelphi University to Host an Exhibition of Artwork by David JacobsAdelphi University is proud to feature David Jacobs: Selected Works, an exhibition presenting the diverse body of work of an artist, sculptor, and educator.
John Grayson from Sound Sculpture (1975, p.180) described sound sculpture as “A new idea for proletarian music [developed]…during the early 1920’s. ‘The new music had to embrace all the noises of the mechanical age, the rhythm of the machine, the din of the great city and the factory, the whirring of driving-belts, the clattering of motors, and the shrill notes of motor-horns.’” Forty years later David Jacobs took inspiration from the sounds of The Wah Chang Tungsten Refinery where he had a studio and created sound sculptures he called Wah Wahs (listed in The New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments) A selection of other works in this exhibition includes drawings and sculptures in various metals. Of this later work, Mr. Jacobs has said, “If my sound sculpture created the music of my life, the later welded works make that music visible.” The Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The Fine Arts Exhibition Hall in the Adele and Herbert J.
