The easiest to buy and use is Ready-mix, which has everything you need in the mix except water, which is added when you’re ready to go to work. You can use this for minimal projects. It would be very expensive to use on a bigger project.

Use a wheelbarrow to mix up your Ready-mix with a garden hose. That way the work is at your waist level and is easier to mix with a shovel. Just roll the wet mix over to the project area when you have the right consistency and pour it.

For a larger project, you can call a concrete company to have transit-mix delivered to your project. That’s the kind you see going down the road in cement mixer trucks with rotating barrels. Make sure you know what the final cost will be including delivery. Sometimes you must pay for the whole truck full, so even if you use only a portion of it you can form another area to use up what’s left over or share it with a neighbor.

You can rent a cement mixer to do the job yourself, and purchase the bags of mixing ingredients and sand. You’ll mix it up in the mixer, just like a large blender, add water until the desired consistency is achieved, and that’s it. Pour it into buckets or wheeled cart to transport to the project. This works well when you have an awkward place in which to pour. It does take some getting used to if you’ve never done it before, but it’s a good skill to learn and can be very useful to know.
