The noted students join over 1900 3rd-8th graders from across Texas that received such acclaim.  Hundreds of schools participated in the project to select and honor students who not only excel academically but show that they are well-rounded individuals.  To find a qualified individual, teachers were asked to only consider students with a B average or higher.  From there, they were asked to nominate students who were involved in extra-curriculars, athletics, participate in community or church groups and are involved in community service.  Students nominated then submitted an application to complete the process.

Lone Star State Scholars was established to inspire children to achieve with the hope that it motivates students at a young age level to show that achievement counts, hard work matters, and actively participating in school and community events is important.

"It is inspiring for us to see all that these young people have accomplished," said Mike Gill, President of the organization. "As I read the applications that came into our office, I was amazed at how active and involved these students are in so many activities.  We have a wealth of developing talent in the state.  A Lone Star State Scholar is a classroom leader today who will be one of our country's future leaders."

2010 marked the fifth year of Lone Star State Scholars, part of the 13-year old Scholars Program which honors students in 24 states.

In August of last year, the Lone Star State Scholars were honored in Arlington by the Texas Rangers.  Prior to a Rangers game, Scholars and their family convened for a special “Salute to the Scholars” event.  They heard from former Rangers Jim Sundberg, were visited by the Rangers mascot and energy squad, and heard a motivational message from Scholar’s President Mike Gill.  For many Scholars, it was the highlight of their summer.

A book has been published listing all the 2010 Lone Star State Scholars and their accomplishments.  In addition, the names of the honorees are posted on the Lone Star State Scholar website: http://www.lonestarstatescholars.com.
