Feb. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- Theoretically derived career education programs are not well documented in the career development literature and few, if any, have been produced for use in Australian high schools. This remains so, despite growing recognition of the negative effects of a schism between theory and practice.

Dr Lee-Ann Prideaux author of the Career Choice Cycle Course (CCCC) has set out to design a practical course based on informative contemporary career development theory and robust research. Social Cognitive Career Theory provided the sound basis for the CCCC and, within this framework, a series of six units was devised. Each unit is filled with easy to follow whole class, small group and individual activities designed specifically to prepare adolescents for the important career-related decisions they need to make prior to their final years of schooling (e.g., selection of subjects, choosing further training and tertiary courses). Ideally, the course runs for about 9 weeks using one lesson per week, although it can be condensed or expanded depending on the scope of discussions and time allocated for activities.

Longitudinal survey research was used to evaluate the CCCC with teacher facilitation. It was found to assist students’ career development overall and demonstrated statistically significant gains in career maturity, and significant reductions in career indecision and maladaptive decision-making coping patterns. A matched sample of students who did the CCCC exhibited significantly better outcomes than those doing a generic vocational course.

The CCCC has since undergone further refinement over a period of five years during which time it has been trailed by teachers working with Year 10 students in a Queensland high school. It has been mapped to Australian Blueprint for Career Development curriculum competencies. The CCCC places paramount importance on career process skills such as building self confidence for career information search behaviour, setting realistic short-term and long-term goals, and implementing procedures for informed decision-making. It is vital for students to be equipped with these skills so they can meet the demands of a volatile world of work in the twenty-first century.

These books are a must-have for any school, particularly guidance counsellors helping students find career pathways.
