| Intergenerational activities prove a big hit at Claremont LodgeThere was no hint of a generation gap when a Great Yarmouth dementia care home played host to a group of young people from a community project.
By: Mosaic Publicity Claremont Lodge Acting Manager, Nicola Power, said the youngsters were a big hit at the home, which is run by leading East Anglian care provider Healthcare Homes. She said: “The young people came in to play bingo, participate in craft projects and do cake decorating with the residents. They also delivered a present to each resident who was there on their last visit, which was very moving as they had built up strong friendships by then. “The residents really engaged in the sessions and were sad to see the youngsters go afterwards. The Right Direction members were also fantastic and incredibly understanding of our residents’ needs. Everyone involved has benefited hugely and we hope we might be able to welcome back Right Direction again some time in 2011.” Right Direction is run by Norfolk County Council. Youth worker, Lauren Duffield, said “The project really brought out the young people's caring sides - on the last day they even requested to stay longer to complete their game of bingo! One young person now wishes to be a carer and the school will be looking into a possible work placement in this field.” Claremont Lodge, one of a portfolio of 23 homes run by Healthcare Homes, is one of the few specialist dementia units in the region. The home is situated in the same grounds as Claremont House, which offers nursing care for the elderly.
