By: A Head for PR Singer, Olly Murs, the charismatic runner up of X Factor 2009, is giving his support to children’s Charity Brainwave by becoming patron of the Charity. Olly was touched by the Charity when he paid a visit to Brainwave’s Centre in Witham, Essex and met some of the families and their children with conditions including Cerebral Palsy, Downs, Autism and Developmental Delay. The families attend the Centre where they work with the therapists to learn exercises and therapy programmes, which the families then carry out at home. On this occasion, they received some added “morale boosting” therapy on the day that Olly visited, demonstrating the benefits of genuine celebrity support. Olly said, "It was great to meet some of the children on the Brainwave programme as I got to see for myself how the hard work, determination and effort that's put in can literally change their lives. I was very touched when I came down to visit the centre in Essex, and am delighted to become a Patron of Brainwave. I am looking forward to working alongside them and helping raise awareness of this fantastic charity." Liz Mayer (son Jack on Programme): “For Olly to come to see us and the children at Brainwave was amazing and he had time for us all. During his time with us you could see that his heart was going out to the children and he made us feel we were no different to any other parent.” Marie Adesola has a son called Tobi who is doing the Brainwave Programme and said, ‘It was a joy to meet Olly, especially for my daughter aged 10. He was so lovely and down to earth and the fact that he was so interested in every individual family made it so special. Olly wanted to find out how Tobi was progressing on the Brainwave Therapy Programme, what was involved and how doing the exercises on a regular basis has really made a difference.’ Rebecca Lock (daughter Honey on Programme): “Honey absolutely adored Olly and now watches him every time he is on the television. She only has to hear two beats of his record and recognises it right away and gets really excited and sings along. It was absolutely brilliant that he came to see us at Brainwave.” Kim Upson (daughter Frances, aged 8, on Programme) said: “We really appreciated the fact that Olly took some of his time in his busy schedule to come to see us and made the effort to talk to everyone individually and did rush to get away.” Christine Cryne, Brainwave’s Chief Executive Officer, added ‘We are so delighted to have Olly on board. He has made such a hit with the families and to have someone of such fame and talent supporting us will make a real difference’. Since 1982, Brainwave has worked with families to deliver individual home based therapy and exercises to help children with a disability or Developmental Delay reach their full potential. This might be anything from sitting and walking to recognising numbers and feeding themselves. The results can be astonishing with 85% of families saying that Brainwave made a significant difference to their child and 80% saying the Charity gave them hope.
