Research Shows Advance Rail Fares Cheaper

Research by UK transport campaigners shows rail travellers can pay up to seven times more for their tickets if they do not book in advance.

Dec. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- The campaign for better transport found that passengers paying on the day to make medium or long distance journeys could leave themselves seriously out of pocket compared to travellers who planned and booked ahead.

Most long distance train operators and rail booking sites promote advance purchase fares and the need to book in advance as the best way of securing the best deals and finding cheap rail fares.

Charles Kemp, Cheap Fare Finder, at rail travel tips website trainfarescheap.com, says: “This research makes it clear that for passengers making long distance journeys, the best option is to plan and book ahead. Leaving ticket buying to the last minute simply costs more and limits your choice. Shop around and shop early is the best advice.”

Train operators offer tickets for sale up to 12 weeks ahead and the cheapest advance purchase fares are usually the first to sell.

With fares set to rise in January now is the best time to be planning ahead and saving money on a trip in the New Year.

Rail passengers planning a trip in the early part of next year, should get organised and book before the 2 January, which is when the new fares come into play.

Travellers searching for cheap fares before the end of December 2010, should find fares available at current prices through until almost the end of March 2011.
