Dec. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- The cell phone and flash disk have a close relationship because none of the scientists can predict when they would appear, but in the present, users cannot imagine what will happen without them. In fact, IBM Company released the first commercial flash disk into the market on December 15th, 2010. It was called the DiskOnkey, with 8MB of the capacity, which was proposed to replace the 1.44MB Floppy Disk. This item became so successful that after 5 years the production of computers which used a floppy disk has completely stopped. However, this product was created by M-Systems Company (a less well-known company in Israel) and IBM played a role of a salesman.

The story of Flash Disk was started by this way, but in some cases, the story was told by another one. The two companies Netac Technology (China) and Trek Technology (Singapore) are currently the largest manufacturers of this device. They had disputed the priority right with M-Systems. In fact, Netac and Trek produce their devices nearly at the same time and non-randomly with IBM. They still continue to pursue the litigation until now. Some courts recognize that the priority right of the products belongs to them, but the others refused this right. In the history of technology, the same disputations have still appeared, such as Popov and Marconi, Bell and Edisson…There was no winner in these disputations. It did not lead to an end. In this time, Lexar proposed the smart card, called Compact Flash which allowed the USB connection. In conclusion, both M-Systems and the other rivals did not create a new entirely invention. The root of this case is the combination of the related technologies.

Users still have to admit that Dov Moran who is the M-System leader, proposed the Flash as a complete product earlier than other producers. After a few years, M-Systems sold the model 8. 16. 32 and 64MB (which is known as the disgo brand) in Europe market. Meanwhile, the disgo had not been designed in the today familiar shape (a small panel was plugged directly into the USB port). A Malaysia student, Pua Hyun Seng has proposed this structure became the standard of Flash Disk. However, this student could not afford to open a company so that he sold his idea to Toshiba Company. As a result, the world had “the killer of floppy disk”. At the beginning of this millennium, the race also began, in which the Asian manufacturers were able to provide the less expensive solutions.

The Flash Disk is not an invention because it is the combination of the related technologies. By the end of 1990s, there were the two most important components, so that the task for the producers was to unite, combine them with the data storage technology EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Red-Only Memory) and the USB (Universal Serial Bus). Flask Disks currently are created by NAND technology (one of the EEPROM technologies which have the module capacity of 8MB to 64GB). This device makes sure 10 years of the storage time and allows more than 1 million uses.
The current flashes are compatible with USB 2.0. However, they cannot reach the speed of 480Mbps because of the NAND technological limitations.

In 2006, M-Systems Company sold to SanDisk (the famous memory card manufacturer) at the price of more than 1.5 billion USD. Most of this money was sent to Moran account but he has not stopped this creative activities. Moran explained this was his family tradition: although his grandfather and father passed the dramatic challenges, they were also the inventors. Moran considered he was excellent as Steve Jobs, Steve Balmer, Lary Elisson (the technology leaders on the 1950s of the last century).

Due to the idea of Modu 1 mobile (a small device which can connect with other devices), in 2007, Moran founded the Modu company. Modu was released later than expected and calculated to meet the economic crisis. Therefore, the producers shifted to the mini model Modu T which had 2.2 inch touch screen, 240x320 pixels of the resolution and 40g of the weight (Guinness recorded this device as the world’s lightest tough phone). To expand its capabilities, the producers use the detachable Modulfy (camerafy – the 5 megapixels camera which can take pictures; sportfy to exercise; textify with QWERTY keyboard..ect). Another device is the model of Modu W, which is used to operate in the Wifi network and is supported by Skype.
