Nov. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- A fantastic star-studded evening was had by all on 17 November as national charity Deafness Research UK hosted a ‘Meet the Scientists’ event at the UCL Ear Institute in London, attended by everyone from volunteers and fundraisers, to high profile supporters like the legendary ‘fifth Beatle’ Sir George Martin CBE and Dame Evelyn Glennie.

Designed to showcase some of the charity’s most visionary research, the evening was an opportunity to thank supporters and engage them with the exciting and latest work of the charity and encourage donations towards Deafness Research UK’s Auditory Centres of Excellence initiative. The event provided the chance for supporters to see the real impact of their generous donations and to meet the world’s top scientists in deafness research.

The scientists speaking on the night included Dr Debi Vickers, Lecturer in Research Methods at the UCL Ear Institute who works to improve outcomes for children with cochlear implants, Dr Deborah James from the National Biomedical Research Unit at the University of Nottingham, who looks at ways to improve communication with hearing-impaired children, Dr Jonathan Gale, Lecturer in Cell Biology at the UCL Ear Institute who researches the cellular mechanisms of sensory hair cell survival and regeneration and Dr Marcelo Rivolta, Senior Research Fellow, at the University of Sheffield, whose work focuses on pioneering stem cell research.

“Without the support we receive from our volunteers and supporters we would be unable to continue with the cutting-edge research we do,” said Vivienne Michael, CEO of Deafness Research UK. “This event was our way of thanking our supporters, while providing them with a direct insight into where all their efforts and money goes. Everyone is aware of the financial situation in the country and we now need our supporters more than ever. It is only through their continued support that our aims, particularly in supporting treatments for childhood deafness, can be realised.”

The evening was kicked off with a speech by Deafness Research UK Chairman Mark Haggard, followed by Juliet Rogers, giving her personal story about hearing loss and the isolation it can create. Juliet has also been a long-term generous supporter of the charity through the Galanthus Trust. Vice president of the charity, Sir George Martin, also gave an inspiring speech on his personal experience of hearing loss and the impact on his life.

Guests were then taken on a tour of the UCL Ear Institute, talking to the scientists in their laboratories, with an opportunity to ask questions about the current state of research. The closing remarks were delivered by Jane Ashley, whose late mother Pauline was one of the original founders of Deafness Research UK along with husband Lord Jack Ashley.

“Support for hearing research, particularly the work in our new UK Auditory Centres of Excellence that help to deliver real benefits for patients, is needed more than ever” added Vivienne. “The event really brought to life the amazing work being done by our funded scientists and emphasised the need for continued support to ensure there is both better treatment today and hope for the future”.
