Nov. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- The young apprentices, who have been working towards their NVQs, awards and diplomas with Cornwall College Business (www.ccb.cornwall.ac.uk), marked the completion of NVQ2 studies at a ceremony on a simulated construction site that has provided a real work environment for them throughout their learning.

Edward Barry from Redruth progressed from the BTEC Foundation Construction Award to the NVQ as part of his apprenticeship with Cornwall College Business.  “As I’ve worked through the different courses, I’ve gained more skills and experience that I’ve been able to use in my job.  I was relieved to pick up an employer as I got to put my skills and knowledge to practical use.”

Edward found employment after he had started the Award with the College, and went on to achieve his full apprenticeship while working for Richard Wilson Builders in Penzance.

“Edward has been an asset to us since he started working here,” said Mr Wilson, “and has been excellent at picking up new skills and applying them to the building jobs we’ve been working on.”

The apprentices have had the opportunity to work on real projects in their placements, as well as on practical tasks such as building walls and plastering in the College’s workshops.

“We try to give our apprentices as many opportunities as we can to develop hands-on skills and construction techniques,” explained Wynroe Heath, Liaison Officer with Cornwall College Business. “It’s been a pleasure working with the learners over the last couple of years, seeing them improve and hearing the positive feedback from their employers.”

As well as construction, Cornwall College Business also offers apprenticeships in subjects as diverse as dental nursing, business, furniture making and information technology.  For full details, and for a list of current apprenticeship vacancies, see www.ccb.cornwall.ac.uk.

“Apprenticeships are as popular in Cornwall as ever,” said Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College. “They provide tutoring, practical experience and they open doors to employment.  As the largest provider in the South West, we’ve built strong links with local businesses, and it’s rewarding to see the success of those partnerships here today.”
