College apprentices building a great future

Construction apprentices from Cornwall College have been recognised at a recent awards ceremony for their exceptional skills and high quality workmanship.

Oct. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- The Cornwall Construction Training Group's (CCTG) Annual Apprentice Awards evening, held at the Atlantic Hotel Newquay, marks the achievements of young apprentices from the building trade.

Winner of the coveted Apprentice of the Year Award 2010 was Joe Hackett from Penzance. Joe is an apprentice with Rhema Building Services, where he works on a range of building projects with his dad (who runs the business) and brother.

Bob Harris, Curriculum Area Manager for Construction at Cornwall College St Austell attended the ceremony to see some of his learners collect their awards. He said: "Joe is an outstanding apprentice who has shown promise throughout his course."

"The annual construction awards are a good opportunity to recognise the exceptional achievement of our apprentices," he continued. "The winners this year have shown they're committed to their trade and have demonstrated skill throughout their courses. My congratulations to them all."

Shortlisted nominees for the CCTG Apprentice of the Year award include Daniel Stevenson, who did his carpentry apprenticeship at Cornwall College St Austell, and Simon Yea, who gained his NVQ3 in Craft Masonry and was awarded Apprentice of the Year 2010 by Cornwall College St Austell earlier this year.

Guest speaker at the event was former WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World, Frank Bruno, who talked to guests about his career and the challenges he had overcome.

"This year's awards evening was excellent, "said Dave Linnell, Principal of Cornwall College, who also attended the ceremony. "Cornwall College Business has built an outstanding relationship with employers, and it's a pleasure to see those relationships in action tonight."
