Nov. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- This new counseling skills course is designed for anyone giving support for loss and grief, including the general public as well as emergency services chaplains, physicians, nurses, social workers, funeral directors, clergy, school counselors, grief counselors and other professional counselors and therapists.

The instructor is Daniel Keeran, MA, MSW, professional counselor and author of Loss and Grief Counseling Skills and Effective Counseling Skills.  He has many years of experience in private practice and hospital settings, designed and conducted grief therapy groups, and conducted grief skill training for nurses, social work practitioners, clergy and other professionals. Mr. Keeran is also available to provide consultation without charge to students requesting guidance for grief-related situations.

Grief Counseling Theory and Skills Course

Course Objective: To acquire knowledge related to many types of loss and the skills for healing grief and moving forward in one’s life.

Prerequisites: 1) Sincere desire to help others. 2) Literacy in the English language.

Topics:
1. The many kinds of loss common to human experience: breakup, death of a loved one, divorce, bankruptcy, terminal illness, permanent disability, and many others.
2. The range of painful emotions of grief and bereavement related to different types of loss.
3. The unfinished business or unspoken words and unresolved issues related to loss and grief, especially in the death of a loved one and terminal illness.
4. The process of letting go and saying goodbye to a loss in order to reconstruct one’s life and move forward.
5.  How to identify and change unhealthy patterns and behaviours resulting from grief and how to adopt healthy behaviors in the recovery process.

Text (provided with tuition): Loss and Grief Counseling Skills by Daniel Keeran, MSW

Assignments (completed by email):
1. Give the answers to a set of questions from the text covering the topics of the course listed above.
2. Write a brief essay on your own losses and related emotions and effects.

Time for completion:  Allowing 2 hours per day, the course can be completed in less than one week but no time limitation is required.
